Held by the Historic Preservation Board and the Cultural Division in conjunction with a hosting municipality or municipal historical society, the event rotates year-to-year among Broward's 31 municipalities.

In , the first Pioneer Day was celebrated, in conjunction with "Heritage Celebration", both Historical Commission events. This was observed during the month of May, nationally and state recognized as "Preservation Month". Starting in to , these were celebrated around October timeframe. While both Pioneer Day and Heritage Celebration were celebrated over a two-day period that included booths, costumes, music and fanfare, in this became a one-day event.

From to , the two events were separated with Pioneer Day the main focus, now sponsored by the Historical Commission and the Libraries Division. Heritage Celebration was still observed in May through differing sponsors, Pioneer Day was observed either in October or December, depending on host availability.
